Would I Benefit From Submental Liposuction/Repair Surgery?
Simply stated, if you look into the mirror and don’t like that double-chin and the loose, sagging skin in your neck, you could be a good candidate for Dr. Kaplan’s submental liposuction surgery. If you have the following concerns, you may want to consider this surgery:
- Excess fat under the chin creating a “double chin” look
- Excess, loose sagging skin under the chin.
- A chin that merges with the neck and is no longer in harmony and balance with the face.
Submental Liposuction addresses the excess fat deposits that accumulate under the chin, often referred to as a “double chin.” Submental Liposuction removes this excess fat making the chin area more youthful looking. Submental Repair tightens and thereby strengthens the muscles beneath the chin to improve the contour of the chin and to bring it back into harmony and balance with the face. Submental Liposuction and Submental Repair are often performed at the same time and are commonly performed in concert with a chin implant and/or a facelift to enhance the overall appearance and achieve the most natural looking, optimal results.

Dr. Kaplan generally performs Submental Liposuction & Submental Repair surgery under IV Sedation and occasionally under MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care). All surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis in our state-of-the-art AAAHC certified operating room suite, complete with all of the required monitoring, anesthesia delivery and emergency equipment. Dr. Kaplan makes every effort to ensure your complete safety and comfort during surgery. If MAC is used, a board certified anesthesiologist is also present throughout the operation as (s)he administers and monitors the anesthesia. Anesthesia will be discussed during your pre-operative appointment.
After you are anesthetized and made to feel totally comfortable, Dr. Kaplan will make a small incision under the chin to introduce the liposuction cannula. This instrument suctions fat cells out and creates a mild heating effect that helps bind tissues together. The overall effect sculpts the area under the chin. A compression bandage is placed over the wound and surrounding area.
If a submental repair is also performed, the incision is made slightly longer and the underlying muscles are inspected. The weakness or separation of muscle fibers is identified and repaired directly with sutures. As this occurs, the overlying skin actually becomes more redundant and is advanced upward and trimmed. The incision is closed with sutures and a compression bandage is wrapped over the area.
- You will awake from surgery with a compression bandage under your chin. This is generally worn for 5 -7 days.
- Dr. Kaplan will prescribe oral pain medication to manage any discomfort.
- Sutures will be removed within 7 days.
- Swelling, bruising and tenderness is normal but subsides a little each day.
- Be sure to keep your follow-up appointments as scheduled.
