Kaplan Facial Plastic surgery

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)

Would I Benefit From Rhinoplasty?
Simply stated, if you look into the mirror and don’t like what you see because of any or all of the conditions mentioned below, then you may be a good candidate for Dr. Kaplan’s Rhinoplasty surgery:

  • Your nose doesn’t seem to be in balance with your other facial features
  • There is a bump on the bridge of your nose
  • Your nose is too wide, too flat, too narrow or has become bulbous at the tip
  • Your nose is crooked (deviated septum) and causes breathing problems
  • You feel that the nose you were born with detracts from your appearance
  • You have breathing problems due to birth defect, disease, or injury

Before the nose is altered, a young patient must reach full growth, usually around age fifteen or sixteen.  In addition, a candidate for any cosmetic surgery procedure must be in good health and have realistic expectations. Many patients have chin augmentation surgery in conjunction with rhinoplasty to create better harmony of facial features.

What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nose reshaping, is a surgical procedure that alters the size and/or shape of a nose to improve one’s appearance.  The goal of rhinoplasty is to improve the nose aesthetically so that it is in better harmony with other facial features.  A nose may detract from one’s appearance if it has a bump on the bridge or is too flat, too wide, crooked, flared at the tip, pinched or pushed up at the end.  Breathing problems can also often be corrected during rhinoplasty surgery (Septorhinoplasty). Whether you are considering rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons and/or to improve nasal function, you need to know that this is one of the most common surgeries performed today.  Because the nose is one of the most defining features of the face, a slight alteration can greatly improve one's appearance.

Dr. Kaplan understands that each person’s nose is unique to them and that there is not one “ideal” nose that can fit all faces.  Knowing that people want to look their best, Dr. Kaplan creates a more attractive appearance by modifying the feature that detracts from one’s appearance thereby creating greater balance and harmony of one’s facial features. Rhinoplasty can often restore a more youthful look should that be your goal. Rhinoplasty can safely and effectively address one’s concerns and goals while preserving one’s unique ethnic characteristics and facial harmony.

What Dr. Kaplan's Rhinoplasty Surgery Accomplishes:

  • A more attractive nasal shape while preserving your unique ethnicity
  • A nose that balances with and is in harmony with other facial features
  • A nose with a more youthful appearance
  • A nose that allows you to breathe more normally

Anesthesia
Dr. Kaplan generally performs Rhinoplasty surgery using MAC.  All surgery is performed as an out-patient procedure in our state-of-the-art AAAHC certified operating room suite, complete with all of the required monitoring, anesthesia delivery, and emergency equipment.  To ensure your complete safety and comfort during surgery, MAC will be administered by a board certified anesthesiologist who is present throughout the operation as (s)he administers and monitors the anesthesia.  Anesthesia will be discussed during your pre-operative appointment.

Dr. Kaplan’s Rhinoplasty Procedure Description:
After you are made totally comfortable, Dr. Kaplan will do the following based upon which type of nasal surgery you are having:

  • Intranasal surgery is performed through internal incisions and deals with bones, cartilage and soft tissues that are reshaped to create the desired outcome.
  • Open rhinoplasty is sometimes used for difficult noses.  It involves one external incision across the columella (strut between the nostrils) through which he reshapes bones, cartilage, and soft tissues under direct vision.
  • Tip rhinoplasty corrects only an abnormal nasal tip with no changes made to the bony area.  It may be done using either a standard or external approach.
  • Large nostrils may be reduced through tiny incisions at the outer base of the nostrils with either type of Rhinoplasty.

After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery:

  • You will go home with an external cast or splint in place and your nose may be packed with dissolvable gauze.  The cast/splint is usually removed in 1 week.
  • Any discomfort is easily managed with oral medication.
  • Swelling and bruising is normal and subside gradually over 7 – 10 days.
  • Internal sutures will dissolve.
  • Your semi-final results will be visible in 6 weeks with final results visible in 12-14 months.  It takes this time to complete tissue softening.
  • Many patients choose to have Chin Augmentation at the same time as their Rhinoplasty to ensure the most satisfying, optimum result.
